Ali Tazi : Samia Wardane, thank you for joining us today. You’ve made a name for yourself with your unique approach to abstract and surreal art. Can you tell us how you began your journey into painting and why you chose this particular style?

My journey into painting started as a personal exploration, a way to express thoughts and emotions that couldn’t be conveyed through words. Over time, I gravitated towards abstract and surreal styles because they allow me to explore deeper themes and invite viewers to interpret my work in their own way.
Ali Tazi : Your work is known for its large canvases. What draws you to create on such a grand scale?
Samia Wardane: Working on large canvases gives me a sense of freedom. It allows me to fully engage with the space and the process. The scale also enhances the impact of the piece, creating an immersive experience for the viewer. It is about creating a presence that can’t be ignored.
Ali Tazi : You’ve participated in many exhibitions. Could you share a particularly memorable moment from one of them?
Samia Wardane: One memorable moment was during an exhibition where my work was paired with poetry
Seeing people connect with both the visuals and the words, sometimes interpreting them in ways I hadn’t considered, was incredibly rewarding. It highlighted the dialogue that art can create.
Ali Tazi : Texture and layering are prominent in your work. Can you explain how you develop these elements?
Samia Wardane: My process is very hands-on. I work with a variety of materials—acrylics, mixed media, and sometimes natural elements—to build layers that add depth and texture. These layers create movement and complexity, making the painting more dynamic and engaging.
Ali Tazi : Your paintings often explore personal and societal themes. How do you decide what themes to focus on?
Samia Wardane: The themes come from a mix of personal experiences and observations. For example, my painting “Ruban d’Espoir” was inspired by the resilience of those facing breast cancer. On a broader level, I’m drawn to themes that provoke thought and spark conversations about human emotions and societal issues.
Ali Tazi : Does your Moroccan heritage influence your art?
Samia Wardane: Definitely. Growing up in Morocco has had a profound impact on my perspective and my work. The rich cultural traditions, vibrant colours, and intricate patterns of Moroccan art have all inspired me, while the landscapes and natural beauty of the country are a recurring theme in my paintings.
Ali Tazi : What do you hope people feel or take away when they see your work?
Samia Wardane: I hope my work encourages people to pause and reflect. Whether it’s a memory, an emotion, or a new perspective, I want viewers to engage with the piece on a personal level. It’s about creating a connection.
Ali Tazi : Can you tell us about any upcoming projects or exhibitions?
Samia Wardane: I’m currently working on a project that combines painting with poetry, titled “Thus Spoke the Canvas.” Each painting will be accompanied by a poem, creating a dual experience for the audience. I’m also experimenting with new techniques to expand my artistic expression.
